Stefan Köchel on Hans Gross
Alumni in portrait October 2026
How were crimes solved before DNA analysis and modern forensic laboratories existed? And how is a scientist from Graz connected to the work of Scotland Yard and the FBI?
Hans Gross is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern forensic science. Born in Graz, he studied at the University of Graz, worked as an investigating magistrate, and developed methods that had a lasting impact on the scientific investigation of crime. From crime scene photography and the collection of fingerprints to the famous crime scene investigation kit, his ideas influenced investigative work far beyond Austria.
In this special edition of the Alumni Podcast, we speak with Stefan Köchel, Curator at Hans Gross Kriminalmuseum, about the extraordinary life and work of Hans Gross.
