"So we go to the movies to be entertained, right?
Supposing that your answer is yes, well, mostly, let me ask you another question: Does a requiem to a woman’s life as a casualty of GDR sports politics and broken dreams sound even remotely entertaining?
This is not such a shallow question as it might seem at first glance. After all, the trope of the (former) GDR woman as slave to … you fill in the blank… is as shop worn as Nike’s exhortation that we can DO IT.
And, yet, there are certainly a number of ways in which this film goes beyond tired tropes. We simply need to recalibrate “entertainment” and know how to “see” in a profound way. Because at the end of the day, Rensing DARES us with this film in ways that few contemporary films do.
So, I would like to begin with some background that outlines recent German/European film culture’s relationship to entertainment so as to frame our viewing experience of Rensing’s recent film in a broad cultural frame. During our discussion, I hope that we will think not only about I’ll propose that looking at the what (plot), but at how (form) this film moves us. This, I hope, will help us get at the question I posed at the outset. Thinking about how this film is dares the audience can help us break out of the restricting corset of what entertainment means and can, as a consequence, enrich our viewing experience(s)".
